The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has called on media houses to desist from the use of anonymous source when revealing sensitive intelligence to the general public.
This was disclosed by the Director General of the Commission Balarabe Shehu at the opening ceremony of a two day workshop organised by Zakclair Investment Limited.
With the theme “Use of Broadcasting in complementing the military in conflict mitigation and management in Abuja .
The Media plays a vital role in any society as its duty is to inform, investigate , educate, and entertain .
But in recent times this has not been the case as some media houses tend to post reports that pose a threat to National security.
Reports on issues like politics, religion, ethnicity, power, are very sensitive to the public.
But the need to drive traffic has pushed some media houses to promote sensational news which viewers now act upon it.
This work shop is meant to bring synergy between the armed forces and media .
There is an urgent need for the media to support military campaigns and the media should also be encouraged to practice professionalism at all times .
At this workshop the Chief of Defence Staff is represented by the Director of Training Defence Headquarters
He complements the military on its non-kinetic efforts in containing insurgency.
The Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission is a special guest and his caution to the media is to be mindful on its use of anonymous sources to reveal sensitive intelligence to the general public.
Some of the topics to be presented at this workshop include anchor obligations in conflict sensitive broadcast content, dimensional conflict, types and actors , rules of engagement and humanitarians concerns.
