Iran’s judiciary announced Wednesday that 21 people, including high-ranking local officials, have been sentenced to prison in connection with the fatal collapse of a building that sparked widespread anti-corruption protests.
43 people were said to have lost their lives on May 23 when the 10-story Metropol building, which was under construction in the city of Abadan in the southwest province of Khuzestan, caved in.
The Judicial Authority said that “the 21 offenders were sentenced to three years in jail for manslaughter caused by failure to observe government laws and building safety, resulting in the deaths of 36 men and 7 women.
It added that current mayor of Abadan, two former mayors and several city officials were among those convicted.
The disaster was one of the deadliest in recent years in Iran. The bodies of those who died were recovered by emergency services after nearly two weeks.
