The Bayelsa state government has expressed its willingness to partner with the Society Of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria to reduce maternal and newborn mortality.
Welcoming the President and members of the society to Government House Yenagoa, Governor Seriake Dickson said it is his desire to see every pregnant woman registered and captured in a data system to receive adequate medical care and attention.
A 2017 study by the World Health Organization reveals that 5 countries account for half of all newborn deaths in 2016 with Nigeria third in the list, just behind Pakistan and the Democratic Republic Of Congo.
Bayelsa also contributes to the statistics in a country where women die from complications during and after pregnancy, but Governor Seriake Dickson wants to halt the trend, at least, at the state level.
The Bayelsa Governor sees the Society Of Gynaecology And Obstetrics Of Nigeria as worthy partners in the life-saving venture.
Both parties pledged to work for the reduction of maternal and infant mortality rate in the state and country.
