The National Emergency management Agency is venturing into Proactive and Predictive Disaster Risk Management in line with best practices.
The Director General of the Agency , Mustapha Ahmed disclosed this while unveiling a new set of operational Vehicles and specialized search and Rescue Equipment in Abuja.
Current trends in hazards identification, risk mapping and actual disasters have shown increasing instances of structural collapses, fuel tanker explosions, floods , road crashes and fire outbreaks which are either isolated or derivative disasters.
In recent weeks, devastating floods have ravaged countries such as South Africa, Pakistan, India, Japan, the Gambia, Italy and a host of other countries including Nigeria.
The devastation that has trailed these floods makes it easy to identify gaps in the national inventories of disaster management, equipment and technology in Nigeria.
This informed the decision of National Emergency Management Agency to prioritize the enhancement of it’s fleet of operational vehicles and urban search and rescue specialized equipment.
The Agency believes these new acquisitions will close existing gaps and meet the current operational challenges faced by actors responding to emergencies in the field .
