The people of Owaza in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State have cried out over the increased
incidences of gas flaring in the community by the Shell Development Corporation and urged the federal government to urgently intervene to forestall impending health hazards in the area.
The traditional ruler of the Etitioha Ipu Autonomous community, His Royal Majesty, Eze Obioma Levi Nworgu made the call when our reporter visited the community yesterday. He lamented the alarming proportion by which the company flares gas in the air, saying that it grossly affects the health of the people.
According to him, one of his elder brothers, called Henson died recently as a result of the inhalation of the emitted gas and stated that representations to Shell to the flaring of the gas fallen on deaf ears.
