The Ondo State Police Command has said all residents with illegal firearms have 21 days to turn them in at the nearest police station.
The State Commissioner of Police, Gbenga Adeyanju, gave the directive at a press conference in Akure.
Our Correspondent reports that in order to mop up illegal firearms in the hands of individuals, the police authorities in Nigeria ordered all the commissioners of police in the nation’s thirty six States to carry out the task.
CP Adeyanju said the directive was in compliance with the directive of the inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris to mop up illegal arms and ammunition in the country.
The police boss subsequently constituted a committee to handle the exercise. He warned that failure to comply with the directive would lead to sanctions.
The police boss also used the forum to parade some suspects who specialised in car snatching.
