The federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing said the Second Niger Bridge is near 40 percent completion.
An official of the ministry said a lot is being done on Asaba and the Onitsha ends of the bridge, five months after the construction started.
He said the project when completed will compliment the existing bridge, built since in 1965, which is already weak due to the large number of vehicles plying the bridge.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had late last year assured Nigerians of the Buhari administration’s determination to complete the multi-billion naira project.
Osinbajo gave the assurance during a funeral mass for late Mrs Roseline Ezinma Akabueze, the mother of Ben Akabueze, the Director-General, Budget Office, Abuja at St Gabriel Catholic Church, Ifitedunu, Anambra State.
Osinbajo explained that the FG under President Muhammadu Buhari is committed to completing every federal project in the South East especially the Second Niger Bridge.
“President Buhari went to China to negotiate with them about the second Niger Bridge and East-West road.’’
He said that everything has been put in place to ensure the completion of Enugu-Onitsha expressway.
