Heavy monsoon rains in western Nepal prompted landslides, killing at least nine people, including three children, according to an official.
According to Dizan Bhattarai, a spokesman for the National Disaster Rescue and Reduction Management Authority, five members of a family were sleeping when their house was carried away by a landslide in Malika village, Gulmi district, roughly 250 km (156 miles) west of Kathmandu.
Meanwhile, in the neighboring Syangja district, a lady and her three-year-old daughter were murdered in a landslide that swept away their home, while two others were killed in Baglung district, which borders Gulmi.
According to reports, at least 35 people have perished in Nepal due to landslides, floods, and lightning strikes since the beginning of the annual monsoon rains in mid-June. Rains typically last until mid-September.
Hundreds of people are killed each year by landslides and flash floods in Nepal’s primarily hilly terrain during the monsoon season.
