The Nigeria Bar Association led the pack of professional bodies and individuals lending support to the call for a Constitutional role for traditional rulers in the country.
And to end insecurity, the monarchs advocated funding of the institution through what they call security votes.
It was another day for the parliament to engage members of the public on the occasion of the 2024 Open Week.
Professional bodies such as the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, the Nigeria Guild of Editors, were duly represented to add their voices to the issues of the day.
The role of traditional institutions was on the front burner at a session chaired by the Speaker, Abbas Tajudeen.
Traditional rulers, like every other contributor, said ensuring a definite role for them will help solve the nation’s security problems
Other commentators argue that the Land Use Act has greatly weakened the importance of the traditional institution, and they want the prestige of monarchs elevated.
On day two of the 10th House of Representatives’ open week, the agreement is that the function of traditional rulers must be clearly stated in the constitution, and political influence should be kept to a minimum.
