The hashtag ReformEFCC protest which was scheduled for Friday failed to hold.
This could be as a result of the heavy presence of security operatives at the Lagos zonal office which must have deterred the demonstrators.
For hours, a joint team of security personnel waited to receive peaceful protesters at the Economic and financial crimes commission’s zonal office in Lagos, but no protester was on sight.
Online conversations had suggested some protesters tweeting #ReformEFCC will gather at zonal offices of the anti graft agency, the concerned Nigerian youths are seeking an end to alleged human rights violations, indiscriminate arrests, profiling by some EFCC operatives.
Operatives of the Lagos State Anti-Crime Outfit – Rapid Response Squad (RRS) with their vans were stationed strategically at routes leading to the Lagos EFCC office.
On Thursday, spokesperson for the commission had put security operatives across Nigeria on alert that some groups were planning a series of protests against the EFCC.
Also, some civil society organisations under the name coalition for transparency and economic reform pulled out from the protest at the last minute when they discovered the alleged sponsors of the protest are a former governor and two ministers.
But the protesters have clarified that the protest is not politically motivated and warn against turning it into a political demonstration.
