Lagos-based lawyer and human rights activist, Femi Falana has blamed the Nigerian Police for the stampedes experienced at palliative distribution events across Nigeria, which claimed many lives.
Falana, who spoke at the Rotimi Akeredolu Leadership Lecture Series to mark the first anniversary of the death of the former Governor of Ondo State, urged the Federal Government to pay compensation to the families of those who died in the stampedes.
It is one year after the death of former Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, who bowed to the icy hands of death after a protracted battle with prostrate cancer.
That is why allies, particularly those who participated in his administration, including Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, organized this memorial lecture for a man widely regarded as a fearless leader.
The guest speaker, Femi Falana, paid glowing tribute to the former governor, describing him as a man of enormous knowledge and love for his people.
Mr. Falana blamed the Nigerian Police as responsible for the stampedes at food distribution events in some states and demanded compensation for the families of the deceased.
Others also commended the former Governor’s courageous stance in tackling insecurity.
