A 13-year-old boy was arrested by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command for unlawfully possessing a firearm at Ikkot Ibiok Village, raising concerns about increasing access to illegal weapons among minors.
The police say, Samuel Sunday, a primary school pupil, stormed the school with a locally made gun before security was alerted.
The Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare represented by the police spokesperson, ASP Timfon John, says this is part of a broader crackdown on crime.
Alongside young Samuel, several other suspects were paraded for cultism, child trafficking, and illegal possession of firearms.
During the parade, police displayed seized firearms, hard drugs, and a large cache of illicit drinks—a clear evidence of an underground crime network, according to the authorities.
While police insist they have strong evidence, some of the suspects, say they are innocent.
Though the police maybe happy concerning these arrests, right advocates are questioning the Police for parading a minor regardless his crime and the rising insecurity among young people.
For now, the police say investigations are ongoing and suspects will be charged to court.
