The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board JAMB, has called for the agency’s autonomy.
JAMB Registrar Professor Ishaq Oloyede said the government should stop funding the capital and overhead of the examination body.
He made the remark while testifying before the House of Representatives Finance Committee as part of the National Assembly’s 2023-2025 Medium Term Expenditure Framework session.
According to the Registrar, the government should only pay staff salaries in order to give the examination body complete autonomy.
Additionally, he advised the National Assembly to avoid evaluating the performance of other examination bodies in the nation using JAMB’s remittance success as a metric.
According to the JAMB registrar, examination bodies are not revenue generating agencies but social service providers.
The deputy chairman of the committee, Mr. Sa’idu Abdullahi, urged government agencies to emulate JAMB in the areas of transparency and accountability.
