There was an early morning jailbreak today at the Federal Correctional Center in Kotonkarfe, where 12 inmates escaped, with one already rearrested and returned to custody.
Sources told TVC News they suspect an internal compromise, as the inmates reportedly escaped through the tower without damaging the facility, raising concerns that require thorough investigation.
In 2019, over 200 inmates fled the prison after a section of the facility was overrun by floodwaters following heavy rainfall in the town.
Meanwhile, the Kogi State Government has vowed to work with security agencies to uncover the circumstances surrounding the early morning jailbreak in a bid to apprehend the masterminds.
A statement issued by the State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, described the incident as “unfortunate” and assured citizens that the government is taking decisive steps to prevent a recurrence.
He commended security agencies for their swift response and urged residents to stay vigilant, noting that Governor Usman Ododo has directed the State Security Adviser to support the Correctional Center and other agencies with logistics and resources to boost operations.
