The Vatican has announced the death of Pope Francis at the Age of 88.
The Pope who had been battling Pneumonia for a few weeks and made his last public appearance at Saint Peter’s square for Easter blessing on Resurrection Sunday.
He was an Argentinian Cardinal who took over from Pope Michael Ratzinger known as Pope Benedict XVI who abdicated for him to become the Pope.
His death was announced by Cardinal Francis Farell “Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 AM this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church.”
Pope Francis was born on 17 December 1936 as Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina as the eldest of five siblings.
He is the first member of the Society of Jesus or the first Jesuit to become the Pope and also the first raised or born outside of Europe.
