The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has approved the deployment of Corps Members with relevant qualifications to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency’s (NDLEA) Counselling and Rehabilitation Centres across the country.
This decision follows a request by the NDLEA Chairman, Brigadier General Buba Marwa (Rtd).
According to General Marwa, NDLEA currently operates rehabilitation centres in 30 states, with plans underway to establish centres in the remaining 7 states, including the FCT, to ensure nationwide coverage.
The request was made during a courtesy visit by the NYSC Director General to the NDLEA headquarters in Abuja.
General Marwa also proposed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to clearly define areas of collaboration between the two organisations.
He commended Brigadier General Nafiu on his recent appointment and wished him a successful tenure.
Earlier in his remarks, the NYSC DG praised Marwa for his impactful leadership as former Lagos State Governor and for his ongoing achievements at the NDLEA.
Regarding the NDLEA’s suggestion for a mandatory drug integrity test for prospective Corps Members, Nafiu acknowledged it as a commendable idea but noted that NYSC cannot implement such a measure unless it becomes government policy, as the Scheme’s legal framework does not currently provide for it.
