President Buhari says he is concerned about cases of sexual harassment and other forms of corruption in tertiary institutions.
He stated this while declaring open the Fourth National Summit on diminishing corruption in the public sector with the theme “Corruption and Education Sector”.
The President said corruption in the education sector had continued to undermine investments.
The National Summit brought together education sector under the radar of anti-graft agencies in the country.
The Summit was organised by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Office of Secretary to Government of the Federation (OSGF) and Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

This critical sector has faced serious challenges lately from the safety of schools to issues of poor funding and intermittent strikes by unions in tertiary institutions, all of these have significantly slowed down its developments.
Buhari expressed concern over the appearance of numerous corruption schemes in the educational field.
President Buhari insisted that despite theses challenges, his
administration has invested so much in the education sector and it’s often fairly criticised for doing little. The president is also worried about cases of sexual harassment and wants the ICPC to stem the tide.
Government and stakeholders in the educational sector are concerned about the manifestation of various forms of corruption in the universities.
The president noted that he is aware that students in the universities use various terminologies to describe different
forms of corruption used on campuses.
Chairman of the ICPC Bolaji Owanosoye revealed that the fight against corruption got a fresh impetus under the
administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.
The commission recognised President Buhari as an anti-corruption icon but the chairman admitted that corruption is in indeed fighting back.
Corruption in education manifests in different ways such as recruitment of unqualified or unfit persons to teach at primary
secondary or tertiary levels.
Former chairman of the independent National electoral commission (INEC) Professor Ataru, Jaga was the keynote speaker, he blamed the bureaucracy in the federal government for the worst in corruption in education.
Buhari pointed out that the total education budgets for the Federal Government, the 36 states that make up the Federation, and the educational institutions’ own internal revenue streams are other issues that deserve the attention of those who oppose public funding of education.
The president stated that the government would continue to ensure access and set basic standards for high-quality education.
