The European Union’s, EU, Parliament in Brussels has approved a single device for charging all mobile electronic devices from 2024.
EU consumers will soon be able to use a single charging solution for their electronic devices following the decision which came after a protracted battle with mobile electronic devices manufacturers especially Apple Incorporated.
By the end of 2024, all mobile phones, tablets and cameras sold in the EU will now have to be equipped with the USB Type C charging port from spring 2026.
The obligation will also extend to laptops.
The new law adopted by the parliament at plenary on Tuesday with 602 votes in favor, 13 against and 18 abstentions, is part of a broader EU effort to reduce EU waste and to empower consumers to make more sustainable choices on that.
In Europe, consumers will no longer need a different charger every time they purchase a new device, as they will be able to use one single charger for a whole range of small and medium sized portable electronic devices, regardless of their manufacturer or new.
Mobile phones, Tablets, digital cameras, headphones and headsets, handheld video game consoles and portable speakers and more, which are rechargeable via a wired cable operating with a power delivery of up to 100 watts, will have to be quit with a USB Type C port.
The move by the European parliament is designed to help in reducing waste especially Electronic wastes within the region thereby helping reducing the emission of Green House Gases as a remediation step against the phenomenon of Climate Change which has recently become more noticeable with heat waves, drought and devastating natural disasters in several parts of the World in the last few years.
The move is also a Cost Cutting measure for consumers who will no longer need to buy different charging devices for each Electronic device that they buy or a new one each time a new Electronic device is bought.
