Rehabilitation work underway at two dams in Ekiti

Rehabilitation work is underway at two dams in Ekiti State under the 3rd National Urban Water Sector Reform Project. The failure of previous interventions in the provision of potable water in the State is why an NGO has organised a media/CSO round table in Ado Ekiti
on the current effort.

TVC News Correspondent, Akin Ogunmola reports that the appalling statistics that about 80 per cent of the populace in Ekiti State do not have access to hygienic water is why the government is partnering the World Bank and the European Union to rehabilitate Ero and Egbe dams.

The media round table by Environmental Development and Family Health Organization, EDFHO, highlighted the enormity of inadequate safe water in Ekiti State and the components of the 3rd National Urban Water Sector Reform Project.

The WASH activist also rated Ekiti State very low in open defecation index and therefore appealed to the media to join hands with it to sensitise the
public on the dangers inherent in indiscriminate defecation.

The rehabilitation works at the dams are scheduled to be completed by the year 2020 but the timeline of the project shows that by the middle of this
year, potable water would be available to the communities bordering the two dams while more communities as far as Ado Ekiti, the state capital would
benefit later.
