The Academic Staff Union of Universities at the Taraba State University has embarked on an indefinite strike action to press home their demands. The union was on a similar strike in 2018 but suspended it when government promised to meet its demands.
The academic calendar of Taraba State University has again been disrupted following the lecturers’ move to embark on indefinite strike action.
The fate of final year students to graduate this year is now hanging, pending the time the state government and ASUU resolve the impasse.
The union alleges that the government failed in its responsibility to implement laws establishing the school which specified funding for the
institution. They argue that no meaningful project was executed by the government to revive infrastructural decay.
The union said it was forced to resume industrial action over issues of funding that led to non payment of academic allowances from 2014 till date
and non provision of required infrastructure to enhance teaching and learning.
According to the union, apart from the library and senate building (under construction), all other buildings in the institution were constructed and
furnished by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund.
The President of the school’s chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NASS), appealed to Gov Darius Ishaku to quickly meet
ASUU demands to enable students continue with studies.
The state commissioner for education Hon Jigem Johannes , says the government is doing its best to provide quality education for citizenry.
He is optimistic that the strike action will soon be over as government is ready to resolve all grey areas with the union.
Educationists in the state believe Governor Ishaku will meet the demands of ASUU since his administration had invested much in the sector.
