Honourable Justice Walter Onnoghen was born on the 22nd of December 1950 at Okurike Town, Biase Local Government Area of Cross Rivers State.
Justice Onnoghen had his early education in Okurike and Ghana
He graduated from the University of Ghana at Legon, Ghana in 1977 having obtained his Bachelor of Law Degree
Justice Onnoghen was subsequently called to Bar in 1978.
His legal practice spanned through public and private practice between 1979 to 1989 when he was made a judge of the High Court of Cross River state.
By 1998, he was appointed a judge of the Court of Appeal, where he served till 2005 when he was elevated to the supreme court.
Justice Walter Onnoghen stood out on the bench for his bravery. In 2007, he delivered that minority judgment that held that there were sufficient grounds to nullify the Presidential election that brought in Umar Musa Yar’adua as president.
His appointment as the Chief Justice of Nigeria was tensed as he was in acting capacity for too long, prompting speculations on the presidency not being comfortable to having him in that office.
He was suspended as Chief Justice of Nigeria on the 25th of January. Most of those who criticised his removal are disturbed about what they considered executive interference in the judiciary.
Perhaps, if Justice Onnoghen has resigned, it may be ending a chapter in the country’s judicial development.
