The Chairman of the International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, Abuja Branch, said one thousand cases of domestic violence have been reported between January and February 2019 in Abuja alone.
This was disclosed by the at an early morning peace walk to sensitise Abuja residents on the prevalence of domestic violence.
Now more than ever, Nigerians have become more aware about the prevalence of domestic violence, especially against women, in Nigeria. But experts believe that awareness raised has not have done enough to discourage the scourge.
The cheering news is that it has gone a long way towards ending the culture of silence as more men and women are now willing to open up once they are subjected to domestic violence
The organisers of the peace walk want government to throw more energy into supporting men as they are increasingly becoming victims of domestic and sexual violence
Domestic violence is not limited to physical abuse, but can also involve emotional and financial abuse. Victims have been advised to seek help in order to curb the prevalence.
