Governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike has revoked the recognition of Celestine Omehia as a former Governor of the State, along with all entitlements of office.
He gave his assent to the House of Assembly’s resolution on a motion to comply with the Supreme Court judgment which set Celestine Omehia as Governor in 2007.
In June 2015, inside the Executive chamber of the River State Government house, Celestine Omehia’s portrait was mounted on the wall, along with those of other past military administrators and governors of the State. This symbolic act was to confirm that the Governor had just restored celestine’s recognition and entitlements as a former Governor.
This was backed by a resolution from the State legislature, even though a Supreme Court judgment had removed the beneficiary from office in 2007.

Seven years later, and with barely one year to the end of Wike’s administration, the government has overturned his decision based on the counter resolution from the State House of Assembly.
There are speculations that Celestine Omehia’s recent ordeal may be connected to his recent fallout with Governor Wike. But the Governor insists that the action was taken out of respect for the rule of law.
Wike stated that what has happened has nothing to do with Celestine but the national assembly doing the right thing.
” If they think what they have done is wrong, posterity will catch up with you. Remember, it does not stop any other government coming or any assembly coming from also doing the same thing.
“As an assembly concern, they have power to correct it and at that time their conscience will not be clear.
Just as it went up at the start of the Wike led administration, Celestine Omehia’s portrait was also taken down by Governor Wike as he concludes the last year of his second tenure in office.
