Kidnapping and attacks by bandits on villages and settlements in Katsina state have become a daily occurrence particularly in the nine frontline local governments of the state.
Recently repeated attacks by bandits on villages in Batsari local government compelled the youths of the area to stage a demonstration particularly as regards the attitude of police in deal with the attacks.
TVC News Correspondent, Abdullatif Yusuf reports that visiting the frontline local government in Katsina state these days, is a journey to be approached with a lot of caution with bandits a lot more brutal in their attacks.
Batsari has borne the full brunt of recent bandit attacks and it’s people are tired of being targets, and upon driving into the local government, what first meets your sight is the ashes of burnt tires at its very entrance.
It is the aftermath of a demonstration by the youths to protest their dissatisfaction with what they view as the lackadaisical attitude of the police in the face of regular acts kidnapping and armed banditry in their town
They were further angered by the fact that an attempt to resort to self help and defend themselves against these attacks has led to the arrest by the Police of leaders of the Vigilante team they formed.
The youths in the Local Council demand for the release of the leaders of the vigilante group arguing that they were only defending themselves.
TVC gathered that the killing of one of the ring leaders and an informant of the bandits, in wagini town by vigilantes operating in the
area, triggered reprisal attacks by bandits on residents of Batsari local government as a whole.
The district head of Batsari says his people have been law abiding citizens and he calls for the release the arrested vigilante leaders.
The police spokesman confirmed the arrest of the vigilante officers through the command media platform but insists that the killing of any
suspect is contrary to the constitution.

tittle holder in Daura who is still missing
With such attacks going on unabated, it is likely that more communities seeking to protect themselves from bandits, may end up breaking
the law.
