Minister of state for Aviation, Hadi Sirika has stepped into the face-off between aviation workers and their employer, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.
The minister invited the parties to Abuja to address issues raised by the workers. This was after the four unions involved in the matter, shut activities at the headquarters of the NCAA in Lagos.
Lilian Eze-Mark reports that Aviation union members picketed the headquarters of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Lagos on Wednesday.
The unions are National Union of Air Transport Employees, Air Transport Senior Staff Services Association of Nigeria, Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals and National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers.
The unions directed staff of the NCAA to embark on an indefinite strike until their demands are met. This was after the expiration of the seven day ultimatum the unions issued the regulatory body. Other demands include reviewed conditions of service.
The next one week, before the minister leaves office, will be crucial to see whether or not a solution to what appears to be a brewing crisis in the aviation sector could be achieved.
