Two hundred women living with obstetric fistula have received free surgery from January to May this year.
The Bingham University teaching hospital VesicoVaginal fistula center released this information as it marked this year’s International Day to end Obstetric Fistula .
Obstetric fistula is a hole in the birth canal caused by prolonged labor without prompt medical intervention. It is estimated that 2 to 3 million women and girls in developing countries are currently living with the condition.
Record has it that in 2018 over 500 women with vvf had their surgeries at the center,and so far for the year 2019, the management of the center say they have recorded a total number of 200 women between
January to date that have received free successful surgery.
In Nigeria, it is estimated that about 400,000 to 800,000 women are living with the problem and about 20,000 more women develop obstetric fistula every year.
Support and assistance from government and well to do individuals will go a long way in aiding victims with Obstetric fistula who are mostly less privileged in the society.
