Leaders of major U.S. ports have added their voices to the growing criticism aimed at President Donald Trump’s ongoing trade dispute with China.
Port of Oakland Executive Director, Chris Lytle in a letter to the U.S. Trade Representative, Robert Lighthizer, warn that Trump’s tariffs and China’s counter-tariffs pose a major long-term threat to the U.S. economy.
Other port leaders in Seattle, Tacoma, Los Angeles and Long Beach and other cities are all opposed to high tariffs on Chinese imports.
According to port operators, the move will cause economic losses to American employers, workers and consumers.
China accounts for 37 percent of Oakland’s total trade volume, including large quantities of U.S. farm exports, that are vulnerable to Chinese tariffs.
