President Buhari has reaffirmed the constitutional superiority of the Police Service Commission over the Nigeria Police Force.
President Buhari also received the 2018 annual report of the commission.
President Buhari’s statement may have ended the supremacy battle between the Nigeria Police and the Police Service commission.
These two have been at logger heads for a while following the recruitment of constables by the Nigeria Police.
The Police service commission act 2001 empowers the commission to be responsible for the appointment and promotion of persons to offices in the Nigeria Police Force. (other than the office of the Inspector-General of Police)
But the Nigerian Police infringed on these constitutional powers of the commission.
President Buhari says the police service commission must work to ensure the police force delivers on its responsibilities.
The chairman of the police service commission also made strong recommendations that will empower the commission in the discharge of its constitutional responsibility.
Top on the list of quick fixes needed is adequate funding.
It is still unclear what will be the fate of the 10,000 constables recruited by the police force, as the Joint Staff Union of the police service commission is still kicking against what they believe is a perceived attempt to render them redundant.
