Kano state governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, said most ‘Almajiris’ roaming on the streets of the state are not from Kano state but from other neighbouring states, while ninety five percent migrated from countries like Chad and Niger Republic.
He said this while reacting to the report that Kano state has the highest number of ‘Almajiris’ roaming on the streets.
The Almajiri unconventional system of acquiring Islamic education particularly in Northern Nigeria, has in recent times become cause for national concern.
The northern establishment has began to re-examine the inherent negative consequences of this socio-cultural engagement that is no longer relevant in the 21st century. It is what has informed the Almajiri education reform system in Kano state.
The Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje believes the Islamic curriculum needs to be totally reformed.
He acknowledges that his government is constrained by paucity of funds to integrate the children into conventional primary schools, but he discloses that there are plans to open modern Quranic schools, with integration of conventional learning system.
