Tunisia’s coast guard has retrieved the bodies of 27 African migrants who were attempting to cross the Mediterranean in two boats that perished off the coast, the national guard announced on Thursday.
The boats sank in waters off Sfax, a popular departure point for African migrants.
Last month, Tunisia’s coast guard retrieved the dead of approximately 30 additional migrants in two different incidents when their boat capsized while going towards Europe.
The national guard reported on Thursday that the coast guard recovered 87 passengers from the same two boats that sank off Sfax.
Tunisia is dealing with an extraordinary migration problem, and it has displaced Libya as the primary departure point for Tunisians and migrants from other African countries seeking a better future in Europe.
