Governor of Adamawa state, Ahmadu Fintiri is appealing to residents of seven local government areas living in flood-prone communities to relocate to safer grounds
This decision follows a warning from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency to the state administration about impending flooding in certain local government districts.
The 14th state executive meeting is being chaired by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, and the subject on the agenda is Nimet’s approaching flood alert.
Still in the state, a recent flood killed six persons in Madagali and that is what Governor Fintiri aims to stop.
The state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, James Iliya explained that NiMET has alerted the state government over an impending three days rainfall starting from the 16th of September.
The Commissioner noted that the state governor, has directed all cabinets members to go back to their local government areas and enlighten their people on the effects of flooding and measures to be taken in order to stay safe.
While emphasising the notice, Environment Commissioner Sadik Mohammed and Health Commissioner Felix Tangwami advised locals to heed the warning and relocate to safer areas.
The council also approved the award of contract for the extension of the Samunaka water drainage from the FGGC to the Air Force Comprehensive School and adjoining communities at a cost of three billion, nine hundred and forty-two million naira.
Adamu Atiku, the state Commissioner for Works and Energy Development, acknowledges that some districts of the state capital are flooded, and the administration is taking steps to remedy the situation.
Madagali, Mubi South, Shelleng, Demsa, Numan, and Yola local government areas have been designated as potentially flood-prone, necessitating the relocation of inhabitants to safer grounds.
