A former Minister of State for Education, Yusuf Sununu, has revealed the proposed unbundling of 115 Federal Unity Colleges across the country is to ensure a better performance in the schools.
The minister made this known at a event held recently in Oyo state.
The unity schools project started in the mid-1960s as an attempt to foster inter-regional education that de-emphasises tribal identity.
Currently, Nigeria has over a hundred unity schools, with the idea of using education as a tool for fostering unity through their location, an admission policy that reflects ethnic diversity, and curricula that prioritise inter-relationships.
Speaking during the 50th anniversary of the Federal Girls College in Oyo, the former minister of state for education revealed that the recent proposal to unbundle the 115 Federal Unity Colleges in the country into basic and secondary schools was to improve education performance.
In 2024 education sector got N1.54 trillion, representing 6.39 per cent of the total budget which is far below 15 per cent recommendation by UNESCO.
Meanwhile stakeholders present at the event expressed concern over the low budgetary allocation for education calling for a public private partnership to improve sector.
Stakeholders here believe that by addressing these challenges, Nigeria can improve its education sector and unlock the potential of its youth for national development.
