The Opposition Lawmakers Coalition has strongly condemned the invalid impeachment attempt against Governor Siminalayi Fubara by members of the Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
The coalition described the move as a desperate ploy to avoid receiving the 2025 budget, branding it an abuse of legislative powers intended to cause crisis and tension in the state.
This development follows a March 13, 2025, letter from Governor Fubara to Speaker Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule, notifying the Assembly of his intention to present the 2025 Appropriation Bill on March 19, 2025, or any other suitable date.
However, instead of upholding their constitutional duty, the pro-Wike lawmakers have resorted to fabricated impeachment proceedings, despite an existing court order barring any impeachment moves against the governor. According to Opposition Spokesperson Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, this charade is nothing more than a tactic to distract from their refusal to fulfill their constitutional responsibility.
The federal lawmakers noted that the real motive behind this sham impeachment is to sabotage the Rivers people. They accused the pro-Wike faction of using the pretence of impeachment to mask their deliberate disobedience to a Supreme Court judgment, which mandates them to receive the budget. Instead of complying, they have chosen to frustrate governance and inflict suffering on their own constituents.
The coalition described the lawmakers as political blackmailers and propagandists, stating that their only agenda is to install a Speaker who serves as Wike’s puppet, an effort they declared as dead on arrival.
The lawmakers dismissed recent allegations against the Chief Judge, labeling it as another failed intimidation attempt meant to drag the judiciary into their unconstitutional schemes. They urged Rivers people to disregard this political theatre, remain focused on their daily activities, and not be deceived by this kindergarten-level blackmail.
The coalition reiterated its demand for an immediate end to these illegal actions, insisting that Governor Fubara remains in office, unshaken, and fully committed to delivering governance to the people of Rivers State.
