The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has lost control of the eastern side of a key bridge in the capital Khartoum to the Sudanese army.
Army forces have taken back control of the eastern side of the Manshia Bridge in eastern Khartoum, according to a military statement.
The last bridge on the Blue Nile that the RSF controlled was the Manshia Bridge.
The army has regained control of nine bridges that connect three key cities in Khartoum, except the Jebel Aulia Bridge on the White Nile in southern Khartoum.
The army moved into Khartoum’s East Nile area on Monday and took control of a number of administrative buildings there.
In recent months, the Sudanese army has achieved significant military victories against the rebel group in a number of areas.
The army currently controls 75% of Khartoum city, which houses the presidential palace and international airport, the majority of Omdurman in the west, and Bahri in the north of Khartoum State, which is made up of three cities.
Nonetheless, the RSF continues to hold positions in Khartoum’s southern and eastern districts.
Sudan has been at war between the Sudanese army and the RSF since mid-April 2023, with more than 20,000 people killed and 14 million displaced, according to the UN and local officials. However, research from US colleges estimates that the death toll is about 130,000.
